Charles William "Bill"  Ballew


Charles William “Bill” Ballew, 83, of Johnson City, passed away Sunday, March 15, 2015. The son of the late Major Lester A. and Zuma Stubblefield Ballew, he grew up in Johnson City. He graduated from Science Hill High School in 1949 and attended ETSU. In 1951, he received an appointment to the United States Naval Academy. Bill graduated in 1955 and married his high school sweetheart, Evelyn Brant, in the Academy Chapel. They had two children, Lynn and Charles, Jr.

After leaving the Navy, he worked as an engineer and for a national consulting firm. After the death of Evelyn, he married Linda Shular and had a daughter, Ellen. In 1967, Bill moved his family to Memphis and developed a successful consulting firm specializing in human resources. In 1991, he married Dorothy “Dot” B. Ballew, his friend since first grade and acquired another daughter, Jenanne. Bill and Dot moved back to Johnson City in 1998. They traveled extensively and were patrons of the arts, including The Johnson City Symphony. Bill was an active member of The Rotary Club of Johnson City.

Bill is survived by his wife, Dot; daughter, Lynn Moffatt and her husband Chris; son, Charles Ballew and his wife Cathy; daughter, Ellen Bennett and her husband Steve; daughter, Jenanne Montgomery and her husband Bob; seven grandchildren, Shane and his wife Vanessa, Alec, Logan and her husband Jason, Kristen, Matthew, Hayley, and Clayton; three great-grandchildren, Kelsey, Kennedy, and Cayden.

The family will receive family and friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday, March 19, 2015, at Morris-Baker Funeral Home, 2001 Oakland Avenue, Johnson City, TN; a short service will follow at 8 p.m. led by Reverend Jane Taylor of First United Methodist Church in Johnson City.

The family requests that memorial contributions be made to The Johnson City Symphony and The River Ministry for Women.
